Internship Program

 

Overview: The Next Generation Media Internship Program is an experiential, project-based internship lasting six months. In this program, participants will be responsible for producing six 1-hour episodes for both the Justice Beat Talk Show and Just-Us YOUth Talk Show. This hands-on experience will allow interns to apply the skills learned in the Remote Readiness Academy and Podcast Multimedia Primer, developing greater confidence in their media production abilities.

Format: Project-Based Learning and Practical Application

Weekly Breakdown

Weeks 1-4: Onboarding and Project Kickoff

  • Week 1: Program Orientation

    • Topics: Introduction to the internship structure, expectations, and goals.

    • Activities: Meet the production team, discuss program objectives, and outline key projects.

  • Week 2: Role Assignment and Development

    • Topics: Assigning production roles (e.g., host, producer, researcher, editor).

    • Activities: Interns express their interests, and roles are assigned based on strengths and project needs.

  • Week 3: Content Planning for Justice Beat Talk Show

    • Topics: Brainstorming topics and themes for the upcoming episodes; outlining episode formats.

    • Activities: Group discussions to identify relevant issues; create a content calendar for production.

  • Week 4: Research and Pre-Production Activities

    • Topics: Strategies for conducting research on guests and topics; preparing interview questions.

    • Activities: Assigned groups research guests and relevant topics for the first episode; draft initial interview questions.

 

Weeks 5-12: Producing the Justice Beat Talk Show

  • Week 5: Recording Session for Episode 1

    • Topics: Techniques for effective recording; ensuring guest comfort and sound quality.

    • Activities: Conduct the first mock recording session; apply learned interviewing and recording techniques.

  • Week 6: Editing Episode 1

    • Topics: Advanced editing techniques; integrating music and sound effects.

    • Activities: Interns collaboratively edit the first episode, focusing on pacing and clarity.

  • Week 7: Post-Production for Episode 1

    • Topics: Finalizing show notes and promotional materials for release.

    • Activities: Prepare episode for distribution, including creating promotional graphics.

  • Week 8: Gathering Feedback and Analysis

    • Topics: Discussing the importance of feedback; analyzing listener engagement.

    • Activities: Analyze early listener feedback on Episode 1 and gather insights for improvements.

  • Week 9: Planning for Episode 2

    • Topics: Applying feedback to improve content; planning the next episode.

    • Activities: Interns brainstorm new topics and guest ideas for Episode 2.

  • Week 10: Recording Session for Episode 2

    • Topics: Advanced interviewing techniques; managing live recording environments.

    • Activities: Conduct the second episode recording, ensuring best practices are implemented.

  • Week 11: Editing and Finalizing Episode 2

    • Topics: Collaborative editing and reviewing; sound quality checks.

    • Activities: Edit the second episode as a team, focusing on seamless storytelling.

  • Week 12: Distribution and Marketing for Episode 2

    • Topics: Strategies for maximizing reach and engagement via social media and other platforms.

    • Activities: Develop and implement a marketing strategy for the release of Episode 2.

 

Weeks 13-20: Producing the Just-Us YOUth Talk Show

  • Week 13: Content Development for Just-Us YOUth Talk Show

    • Topics: Understanding youth audience needs; brainstorming content topics.

    • Activities: Collaborate to create a content calendar with topics and guests.

  • Week 14: Guest Coordination for Episode 1

    • Topics: Best practices for youth guest outreach and management.

    • Activities: Interns reach out to and coordinate with youth guests for the first episode.

  • Week 15: Recording Session for Episode 1

    • Topics: Techniques for engaging youth guests; ensuring comfortable and conversational settings.

    • Activities: Record the first episode of the Just-Us YOUth Talk Show.

  • Week 16: Editing Episode 1

    • Topics: Editing techniques tailored for youth programming; employing storytelling for impact.

    • Activities: Interns edit the episode, focusing on youth responsiveness.

  • Week 17: Planning and Recording Episode 2

    • Topics: Strategizing content based on listener feedback; effective guest integration and flow.

    • Activities: Plan and record the second episode of the Just-Us YOUth Talk Show, ensuring a smooth and engaging guest experience.

  • Week 18: Editing and Finishing Touches for Episode 2

    • Topics: Advanced editing techniques focusing on engaging a younger audience.

    • Activities: Edit the second episode and add necessary elements such as sound clips and themes that resonate with youth.

  • Week 19: Distribution and Marketing for Episode 2

    • Topics: Understanding platforms for youth engagement; creative promotion strategies in social media.

    • Activities: Develop a marketing strategy and rollout plan for Episode 2.

  • Week 20: Analyzing Impact and Gathering Feedback

    • Topics: Evaluating audience engagement and feedback from Episode 2.

    • Activities: Review listener metrics, survey feedback, and assess engagement strategies.

 

Weeks 21-24: Final Projects and Internship Wrap-Up

  • Week 21: Planning for Capstone Projects

    • Topics: Integrating skills and knowledge from both podcasts into a comprehensive final project.

    • Activities: Interns will create proposals for their capstone projects, detailing their podcast vision or additional content.

  • Week 22: Executing Capstone Projects

    • Topics: Application of learned skills in a collaborative environment; project management.

    • Activities: Work on producing a comprehensive podcast episode or multimedia project that showcases their skills.

  • Week 23: Final Presentations

    • Topics: Presenting capstone projects to peers, staff, and industry professionals.

    • Activities: Interns present their projects, demonstrating their production processes and reflecting on their learning journey.

  • Week 24: Reflection and Next Steps

    • Topics: Discussing paths forward in media careers; setting personal and professional development goals.

    • Activities: Reflection session on the internship experience, including what worked well, what did not, and how to apply lessons going forward. Interns also receive guidance on building resumes and preparing for future job opportunities in the media industry.
